Great Zimbabwe's dry-stone architecture
The problem
Building monumental, durable enclosures without mortar, in a region of seasonal extremes, on a granite landscape.
The innovation
Coursed dry-stone granite walls up to 11 metres high and 5 metres thick, laid without mortar, enclosing a capital of a major trading state.
How it worked
Granite exfoliates naturally into slabs when heated and cooled; builders exploited this to produce regular blocks laid in stable battered courses.
Why it mattered
Great Zimbabwe traded gold and ivory as far as China; Chinese ceramics and Persian glass have been excavated on site.
The legacy
Colonial authorities spent decades insisting the site could not be African. Archaeology settled the question long ago: it is Shona-built. The modern nation takes its name from it.
