The Ishango Bone
The problem
How early people recorded quantity and sequence before writing existed is largely invisible to archaeology — bone and stone survive; counting practices usually do not.
The innovation

How it worked
The notch groups are arranged in deliberate clusters rather than a single running tally, which is why they are read as structured recording rather than decoration.
Why it mattered
It is one of the oldest known mathematical artefacts anywhere in the world, and it comes from Central Africa.
The legacy
Interpretations range from a simple tally to a lunar record to arithmetic doubling; the archive records the object as documented and the interpretations as debated rather than settled.
