The problem

Carbon filaments cracked and burned out quickly, and manufacturing them was slow and wasteful, so electric light stayed expensive.

The innovation

A method of encasing the filament blank in a cardboard envelope during carbonisation so it heats evenly and holds its shape.

How it worked

The envelope prevents distortion and uneven burning during the high-temperature carbonisation step, yielding more uniform, longer-lived filaments.

Why it mattered

Cheaper, more durable bulbs made large-scale public and domestic electric lighting practical.

The legacy

Latimer went on to supervise lighting installations in major cities and to write the standard early text on incandescent lighting. Precision: he improved the filament, he did not invent the light bulb.
