What they did
Zang, an engineer in Yaoundé, built a touchscreen device that captures an electrocardiogram in a rural clinic and transmits it wirelessly to a cardiologist in a city hospital for interpretation.
Historical context
Cameroon has a very small number of cardiologists, nearly all concentrated in two cities, while most patients live far outside them.
The legacy
A widely cited example of African biomedical engineering designed around local infrastructure rather than imported assumptions. Zang won the Rolex Award for Enterprise in 2014.
