What they did

Walker developed a haircare line and — the real innovation — a national direct-sales and training network that employed thousands of Black women as agents.

Historical context

Black women were largely locked out of both retail distribution and salaried work. Walker built her own channel rather than asking for access to someone else's.

The legacy

Her agent system prefigured modern direct sales and franchise training. Note the precision: she did not invent the hot comb, which predates her; she built the products, the factory and the distribution.
