What they did

Daly took her PhD at Columbia in 1947 and spent her career on the chemistry of the cell nucleus, protein synthesis, and — with Quentin Deming — the relationship between cholesterol, hypertension and arterial disease.

Historical context

Her research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine helped establish the link between diet, cholesterol and clogged arteries that reshaped cardiovascular medicine.

The legacy

She endowed a scholarship for Black students in the sciences at Queens College in her father's name, and remains a reference point for women entering chemistry.
