What they did

Dean holds three of the nine original IBM personal computer patents, co-developed the ISA bus that let anyone build plug-in cards, and led the team that produced the first gigahertz CPU chip.

Historical context

Early personal computers were closed boxes. An open expansion bus turned the PC into a platform other companies could build on.

The legacy

The expansion-card ecosystem — sound, graphics, networking — grew out of that bus. Dean became IBM's first Black Fellow.
