What they did
Working at Corning and later AT&T Bell Laboratories, Mensah developed processes that dramatically increased the speed of optical-fibre drawing and manufacture, and held patents in fibre optics and nanotechnology.
Historical context
Optical fibre promised enormous bandwidth but could not be produced fast or cheaply enough for continental networks.
The legacy
Higher-throughput fibre manufacturing helped make long-haul optical networks economically viable.
