The problem

Bloomery smelting is limited by furnace temperature; hotter furnaces produce better iron with less fuel.

The innovation

Haya smiths built furnaces that preheated the air blast by drawing it through tuyères set inside the burning charcoal, reaching very high temperatures.

How it worked

Preheating the incoming air raises the flame temperature in the reaction zone — the same principle industrial engineers call regenerative preheating.

Why it mattered

Documented in the 1970s by anthropologist Peter Schmidt working with Haya elders who reconstructed the process.

The legacy

The findings are cited widely and also contested in the specialist literature regarding claimed temperatures; this archive records the reconstruction as supported, not settled.
